When it Rains on Mars

The Magnificent Red Dunes of Sossusvlei after the Rain, Nambia

The Sossusvlei area forms part of a wider region of the southern Namib Desert, characterized by high sand dunes in different shades of orange - the colour an indication of a high concentration of iron. The older the dunes, the more intense the reddish colour, especially when made wet by the rare occasion of rainfall. These dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them higher than 200 metres. The highest dune in the Namib Desert, Dune 7, is about 388 metres high.
